Two hours later, we were sitting in a booth, at Murray’s, and talking about what appetizers to order. It wasn’t a fancy place and had been around forever, but one of my favorite restaurants. The food was served in big portions and you never left the place unsatisfied or without a To Go box.

I scanned the menu. “I can’t decide if I want the wings or the artichoke dip.”

“Let’s get both. I’m starving.”

“Me, too.” I looked up from the menu, toward the front of the restaurant, and that’s when I saw Sonny and Kara walked in. He had on a tie and she looked like she’d dressed up a little more than usual.

Happy for him, I grinned.

“What’s up?” my dad asked, turning his head to look. “Oh, hey. Looks like your friend there has a date.”

“Yeah. He’s been trying to get her to go out with him forever. Looks like she finally caved in.” I wondered why.

Maybe Mackenzie had talked to her?

Whatever the case was, he was looking pretty content at the moment.

My dad chuckled. “I don’t blame him. She’s a cutie.”

Sonny noticed us in our booth, staring at them. He smiled and waved.

“Should we invite them over to our table?” dad joked. “See if they want to join us?”

I snorted. “Ha, right. He’d love that.”

The hostess led them to another part of the restaurant.

“I’ll have to call him later and get some details,” I said, looking at the menu again.

“Speaking of Sonny, I went to see his mother today.”

My eyebrows raised. “Why? You’re not planning on taking her out or anything are you?” God, I hoped not.

“No. It’s not like that. I mean, she’s a flirt. I’ll give her that. It was for something else.”

“What?”

“I’m selling the house and moving to New York.”

My jaw dropped. “What?”

“I know it’s sudden, but I’ve been offered a job. One that I can’t refuse. More money and a lot less stress. I won’t have to travel so much either.”

I just kept staring at him, totally dumbfounded.

“I’d like you to move out there with me.”

I suddenly felt like a helpless, little kid. One that didn’t have any say in his life. “But…”

He nodded. “Yeah, I know. You’re worried about Mattie. If she’s pregnant, we’ll figure something out.”

I finally found my tongue. “It’s not just that. I want to finish school. I have my job and my apartment.”

“You can find something out there too. Hell, if you really want your own place, we’ll find you a condo in the city. I’ll even pay for it. We’ll get you some new furniture too. It’ll be fun.”

A few months ago, I would have jumped at the chance. I’d been sick of living in a small town and there was so much to do in New York. Even Mackenzie, who’d lived out there, had talked about the cool stuff she’d been missing. But, now I didn’t want to leave Diamond Lake. I was finally feeling good about my life.

“I know I sprang this on you suddenly. You’re eighteen and can do what you want.
